I haven't posted anything in a while, been busy. I made this yesterday through a combination of Character Creator and Zbrush. The Character Creator pipeline allows some interesting project possibilities. My process was:
1) Import a photo or illustration into Headshot (Character Creator plugin), and use the head manipulation tools to 'block out' some of the broad features.
2) GoZ to Zbrush and refine the same a bit more. I use PureRef to pull reference images of the Front and Sides to see things like nose and chin shape.
3) Back to Character Creator, refine shape more using Headshot 'sculpting' tools and the built-in head and face manipulation tools.
4) Load SkinGen and try adding some fitting presets. I find that for toon-like characters, I end up going with a more plain 'Base skin' setting, then add material layers on top of it using SkinGen.
5) Hair tends to be tricky, but I generally go with the most suitable preset style and then try to manipulate it.
6) I go back to Zbrush and further refine the character's face, and also bake out some normal maps to use in a SkinGen layer. Due to SkinGen's ability to add most details you need, I only did the basics for a normal map.
7) Once this is all set up, I manipulate the face using face/head using Character Creator's tools until it somewhat resembles the character's face, focusing on most obvious details then working to towards smaller ones.
